Devotional For June!

Living with Chronic Pain

Many know I suffer from debilitating diseases which cause chronic pain daily-some days almost unbearable. Which is why this short devotional from Author Rebecca J. Wetzler is so encouraging!

Everyone suffers pain, whether it be physical, emotional, mental, spiritual, professional.  It’s part of life.  The way we react to it is what refines our character.  I sometimes wonder, however, why so much is necessary.  I suffer chronic pain from both migraines and a permanently injured neck.  They feed off each other, one can incite the other to act up.  They try to define me rather than refine my character.  They have changed the direction of my career, they make me miss work, they stop me from doing things I used to be able to do or new things I want to do, they interrupt my plans, some days it seems there is no end to their interference.  I’ve just gone through another couple of weeks with a dragging migraine, a very debilitating one, so I get discouraged.  I try not to talk about the constant pain, because I know people get sick of it.  I’m sick of it!  But if I want to blog what is ‘real,’ then I need to share that trusting and believing in God’s goodness is not easy while suffering.

Romans 8:28 says ‘And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.’

This familiar scripture lets me know that though I cannot do things I used to do, or what I planned to do with my life, He still has a purpose for me.  I struggled many years, and still struggle in my darkest discouragement, thinking the chronic pain has ruined me for God’s purposes.  But that is not true…it has only changed what I thought my purpose was.  When I am suffering the most, I remind myself to trust that He is working all things in my life for my good, even the debilitating painful days.  I may not understand it today, tomorrow, or ever in my life.  But I choose to believe in His goodness.  He gave me beautiful children and grandchildren whom I am very close with; He provided me with a career, though it took a different direction than I originally planned, and it ended most unexpectedly with additional health issues, this time my heart. He provides me a home, clothes, food, a vehicle to drive.  And after each of my worst struggles, with horrendous pain, He helps me get back up and back at the tasks at hand rather than give in to the helplessness and hopelessness the pain induces.  There is wonder and beauty all around us courtesy of His hand, there are blessings in every day if we choose to see them.  Every day, I make the decision to see His blessings despite the pain.

In the Spotlight, My Dear Sister in the Lord, Author Rebecca J. Wetzler

Rebecca Wetzler, originally a California girl, has lived in Alaska since she was eight years old. The oldest of five children, she was often needed in the surrogate mother role; therefore, she matured quickly. From early in life she was an avid reader, and subsequently developed an interest in someday writing her own books. Her favorite school subject was English writing assignments. To support her two children, she completed an accounting degree, towing her interest in writing along by minoring in English. Her successful career included advancing from an accounts payable clerk to a financial analyst—a far cry from the Christian author of her heartfelt dreams.

She has been a believer from her earliest memories as a small child in Sunday School asking Jesus into her heart. As her life progressed, Rebecca has realized her faith gives her a steady spiritual regrounding to weather the drama of real life, and she wants to share the spiritual truths with others so they may also follow God’s light past the world’s darkness. Bread Box for the Broken is her first book, and she has ideas for more devotionals, some Bible studies, maybe Christian romance fiction with mystery and suspense. It is important for her to share that faith in Christ is her foundation for challenging and purposefully overcoming life-long struggles with loneliness, self-esteem, depression, chronic pain from migraines and a permanently injured neck, and finally unexplained heart failure. Forced to early retire, she really doesn’t know what the future holds, but she knows Who holds her future.

Rebecca's New Novel Out Now!

Anyone else have childhood memories of watching the comedy variety show Hee Haw? Their silly song ‘Gloom, despair and agony on me-e! Deep dark depression, excessive misery-y,' was meant to be funny. And it was. However, it resonated with my young heart and spirit on a deeper level; already, from that young age, a shadowy melancholy plagued my quality of life and threatened my necessary daily functioning. How does one conquer deepening internal blackness? For me, it has only been through faith in the Lord that my soul is able to challenge the untruths forecast by the darkness. John 8:12 says, ‘When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”' This has proven true over and over again; no matter how black the darkness gets, there is always the Holy Spirit's steady glow to lead me out again. Through Bread Box for the Broken I share the scriptural light I have found through the years, proving there is blessed hope for life's journey through God's Word. Jesus says in John 6:35, “I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will never go hungry, and he who believes in me will never be thirsty.” Just as bread and water nourish our bodies, partaking of spiritual bread nourishes the soul with timeless truths, and we all may realize our lives are full of blessings the darkness can no longer hide.
